Can something glimpsed in a split second – something that happens in a moment – possess a timeless beauty? This is what art often does. Or so we believe. In the diary for 2014 time is frozen in an image: the theme of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s 66th diary is ‘the moment’. It features a selection of 56 works from the museum’s collection that depict a specific moment within a movement, process or event. It could be the moment the sponge hits the water in Olafur Eliasson’s installation Notion Motion or the moment at which Rineke Dijkstra released her camera shutter on a beach onHilton Head Island. Or the moment in Rubens’ oil sketch when Achilles is fatally wounded by an arrow, or the moment in a Daumier drawing at which the lawyer accuses the defendant.
It includes artworks in which physical movements such as falling or jumping are arrested in a single image, but it also contains works that capture fleeting emotions such as rage, joy or sorrow. Each moment has its own quality: alternating between heavenly and earthly, blissful and dramatic, decisive and coincidental.
As usual the artworks have been selected to do justice to the great diversity of the collection. The combination of works from extremely varied periods and disciplines reveals great differences but also surprising similarities in how a moment has been captured. Each week you will be captivated by the moments that Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen preserves for eternity.
